Victor L. Crouch, LCSW: Global Social Worker

 In Social Work

Does your job require a high school, community college, technical college or 4‑year degree?
My job as a Global Social Worker requires a Master’s Degree in Social Work, which is six years of college. I attended and graduated from the University of Washington. Go Huskies!

What classes or courses should I take to prepare for this career?
At the graduate level my focus was Administration—how to operate and fund a community‑based organization. At the bachelor’s level I majored in Sociology and learned how to conduct research. Throughout my education I took classes that were interesting and taught me something new; it was my way of discovering my true interests.

Do you work with other people or by yourself?
I do both. Often I do a lot of planning by myself, and then I always seek to work with others. In my career and in the projects I have led, I believe it is best to invest in and listen to people.

Do you work indoors or outdoors?
As a Global Social Worker, my office is the world. My laptop and cellphone are indispensable and allow me to set up an office anywhere I have Wi‑Fi. I also spend a considerable amount of time enjoying the outdoors as a way to learn about a new place.

Do you have to travel for your job?
Yes, I travel pretty extensively for my job. Some of the places I have traveled to are Bali, Indonesia; Japan; South Korea; Okinawa; and Thailand.

Why did you choose this job?
I followed my dream to be a world traveler. Early in college I wanted a job I could do anywhere. I always wanted to be my own boss, make my own rules, and be creative. Most importantly, I needed a job that would make money and be about helping others. I also wanted a career that was interesting, exciting, and fun, and that would let me use all aspects of my education. Being a Global Social Worker has helped me accomplish many of my life goals.

How many years have you had this job?
I received my Master’s in Social Work in 1999. I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 2008. In 2016 I traveled to Bali, Indonesia to attend training to become a Yoga Instructor, and I have been traveling extensively since then. In 2018 I built my first preschool in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. This officially began my work as a Global Social Worker (4 years).

Describe your typical day.
A typical summer day when I am in Thailand:
– Breakfast of fresh fruit
– Teach yoga in the park
– Volunteer with friends at a school or support an orphanage
– Write poetry
– Write to friends in the States about my current project
– Photograph the natural beauty around me
– Fundraise
– Fully live my life

What is the most satisfying or exciting thing about your job?
The most exciting part has been guiding the construction of a school. Building something that people need is most satisfying. A school quickly becomes the center of the community or village. It is amazing how much happiness is created when you build something that will help change people’s lives.

What are some things you don’t like about your job?
N/A. I love what I do.
